During the heat of the summer the Great Sand Dunes can become unbearably warm but in the spring they are very inviting. The stream at the base of the dunes is typically running in the spring and can be a very welcomed oasis.
Rocky Mountain National Park is always great. In the spring, the crowds are down and the wildlife is abundant. The elk are still down in the meadows and all the brand new fawns are full of energy. While there can still be some snow, there is plenty of great hiking available.
The fall is a magical time to visit. The bull elk are protecting their group of cows and you can get a rare chance to watch and listen to the elk buguling.
Colorado and the west has many locations with hot springs that are a portion of the thermal energy complex that is so evident in Yellowstone. This can be a great way to relax after a full day in Colorado's great outdoors. You can build your itinerary with the plan of staying at a location with a hot spring as most are in very beautiful locations.
There are so many places to visit within a reasonably short drive from Denver. Just a few of these destinations are Mt.
